Web Assembly, Wasm in short, was created as an improvement to Java Script. It appeared in March, 2017 with W3C, Mozilla, Microsoft, Google, and Apple as its joint developers. It is an open standard that defines a portable binary code format for executable programs. Java Script was a reliable existing code, but it was not doing much to pace up the functioning of heavier applications on the web.

The basic objective of the new language was to define an Abstract Syntax Tree or AST represented in a binary format. The code could be written and debugged in text format for the sake of programmer convenience.
Therefore it is not really a replacement for Java Script but meant to work alongside it. If JS is the boss, Wasm is more like a competent new intern hired to do the one thing they are good at – speeding up performances on the web.
